Rutilated quartz has long captured the imagination and is known under a variety of names. Some are poetic, such as 'Venus' hair' or flechese d'amour ('arrows of love'). Needlestone simply describes the appearance of the gem. It is also known as sagenite.
Other inclusions create similar effects in rock crystal. Tourmaline quartz is created when dark green or black TOURMALINE is trapped within clear quartz. GOLD and SILVER may also be included. Sometimes, the inclusion appears almost plantlike when green actinolite crystals are included, or dendritic quartz, when iron dendrites appear like ferns or little trees.
CHALCEDONY
Chalcedony is the name given to compact varieties of silica which C comprise minute, often fibrous, quartz crystals densely packed but with submicroscopic pores. The two main varieties are chalcedony, which is uniformly coloured, and AGATE, characterized by curved bands or zones of differing colour.
